ASTRONOMY AT RATHFINNY ESTATE

“As we reach the crown of the hill, a green and pleasant Sussex landscape is revealed: a sun-soaked, slanting bowl of 600 acres, protected from the prevailing winds by an escarpment of National Trust land. In the distance, blue and magnificent, is the English Channel. This is the Rathfinny Estate, which … under Mark Driver’s stewardship, will soon be England’s largest vineyard.” – Sunday Telegraph

Cradle Valley in the heart of the Rathfinny Wine Estate Vineyard was the perfect location for my colleague, Geoff Shaw, and I to share the wonders of the night sky as part of a corporate event.

It was a uniquely beautiful setting. Timeless, still and silent, save for the nocturnal wildlife sounds. The air, scented with chalk soil and rolling grassland, soothed the senses.

In this dark sky location, so utterly perfect for astronomy, we gazed skyward, feeling isolated from the world and yet so connected with the Universe in a way fundamental to the soul.

I would like to thank Owners, Mark and Sarah Driver, for enabling us to live their dream, and I would also to extend a special thank you to Georgia Mallinson, Events Organiser, for her vision, enthusiasm, kindness and wonderful hospitality.

A truly memorable evening …
